WESSEX Volleyball’s men’s team opened their National League campaign with a resounding win over Cardiff.

The side came into the opening fixture of the Division 2 South league season off the back of a victory over Oxford in the National Shield, beating them 3-1.

Without England Junior players Felix Summers and Harry Aplin, Wessex brought in 17-year-old Hubert Ginda into the squad for the match against the Panthers.

The more experienced players started the match and they managed to secure a closely fought first set 25-21.

But they dominated the second, winning 25-12 with playmaker Michael Wahl pulling the strings.

Coach and former England player Matt Hunter gave his substitutes more game time in the third set but this didn’t disrupt the Wessex momentum, as they went on to win it 25-19.

This secured them the three sets to nil victory and a great start to the season.

Wessex men’s next face Richmond Bucks at Parkstone Grammar School.

Elsewhere, the Wessex women’s fell 3-0 to Durham Palatinates in the women’s Super League, and they will take on the University of Nottingham this coming weekend, also at Parkstone Grammar.
