CHERRIES' development squad head coach Alan Connell aims to provide the “best environment” as a pathway for youth players into the first team.
At any level of football, the progression of youth players into the first team is important, but for premier league clubs such as AFC Bournemouth, it is vital there is a clear pathway.
Connell was appointed as manager of the AFC Bournemouth U21 side at the start of 2023 and has seen many players develop over his tenure.
He told the Bournemouth Echo: “We strive to provide the best environment for young players that we can.
“We also want to provide them with big challenges that they have to overcome.
“I’d like to think they’re in an environment that is highly challenging, but we also give them a lot of support.”
The Cherries development squad have a wealth of talent, such as Max Kinsey who appeared on the bench for the first team multiple times last season.
Regarding the squad itself, Connell said: “I’ve got some great characters in my squad and they’re all desperate to be elite footballers.
Connell added: “There are so many variables on how far these players can go, I think all young players need opportunities, but our players need to be ready for whatever’s next.
“I’ve got boys in there that really want to have successful careers, and I believe that many of them can.”
His side returned to winning ways on Tuesday afternoon at New Cuthbury in a convincing 3-1 win over Millwall U21s.
A brace from Lewis Brown and a calmly slotted finish from Kian Tydeman ensured the Cherries side walked away with all three points.
This result moved the Cherries up into 3rd place on 17 points after ten games with only Charlton and Cardiff ahead of them.
After the game, Connell said: “It was a game that was always going to be difficult and the fact they brought some first team players down made it even harder.
“I was pleased with the way it inspired and motivated my players to go up against a strong team.
“I thought we had large control of the game; it was a really good day for everyone in what was a difficult game.”
Next up for Connell’s side is another tough test against Ipswich Town U21s who currently sit in 4th place, albeit having played a game more than Cherries.
Looking ahead to the game, he said: “I’m really looking forward to it.
“At Portman Road, under the lights, we know it will be difficult as it was last year against Ipswich, but my players love playing in those stadium games so really looking forward to the game.”
