CHRIS Billam-Smith is ready to spoil the party at Latino Night in Saudi Arabia against Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez.
In a respectful final press conference ahead of the unification bout on Saturday night, Billam-Smith said: “The last time out against Richard Riakporhe, it was meant to be his night at Selhurst Park, just like this is meant to be Zurdo’s.
“But unfortunately, I'm here to spoil the party again and I'll be doing that Saturday night.”
Zurdo, meanwhile, said he needs to throw a lot of punches to beat the Gentleman, but said he is ready for whatever the Bournemouth boxer brings to the table.
After Oscar De La Hoya teased a potential matchup against Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk for the winner of the fight, both fighters and their camps were hugely respectful of their counterparts ahead of Saturday night’s fight.
Boxxer’s Ben Shalom hit out at the US media saying that the fight was a mismatch, saying that there would be a lot of people ‘embarrassed’ come Sunday morning.
Shalom added: “Saturday night is Chris Billam-Smith's night.”
Billam-Smith’s trainer, Shane McGuigan, said there would be only one winner.
“Chris Billam-Smith, I've been with him for seven and a half years straight from the amateurs the whole way through,” McGuigan said.
“He was touted to become probably a British champion.
“He's been British champion, Commonwealth champion, European champion, world champion and on Saturday night he's going to be a unified world champion.
“We've got lots of respect for Zurdo and the team but we believe that we've got the right game plan and we've got the right attributes to win this fight.
“But it's a Mexican night and I think it's going to be a Mexican style fight with two warriors coming together and I believe there's only one win winner and that's Chris Billam-Smith.”
A theme of the press conference was American Malik Scott’s comments that the fight was set to be a mismatch – calling Billam-Smith a ‘one-trick pony’.
Asked if he took offence to the comments, Billam-Smith shrugged them off: “No, I know the level I'm at.
“There's no offence taken, it just gives me more drive and he’ll be eating humble pie on Saturday night.”
On if him being the career long cruiserweight can bring him an edge on Saturday, Billam-Smith said: “For sure.
“But it's what you do with the size and it's no good just being big and strong. It's the skill and the speed and the power and the punch output that goes with that.
“That's what I'm able to do, and that's why people can't live with me in this division.”
Zurdo was asked what he needs to do to win the fight and his answer was simple: “I need to throw a lot of punches.
“That's it. Win every round.”
Chris Billam-Smith will aim to defend his WBO and bring the WBA belt back to Bournemouth as he faces Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez on Saturday night.
