CHERRIES bounced back in style from their humiliating FA Cup exit at Blyth Spartans to floor League Two high-fliers Bury at Dean Court.

Jimmy Quinn’s troops turned the formbook on its head as first-half goals from Sammy Igoe and Joe Partington put Cherries in command.

The Shakers’ impressive away record took a severe dent as Cherries condemned the visitors to only their second league defeat on the road this season.

Igoe laid the foundations for victory when he opened the scoring with a deflected strike six minutes before the interval.

And teenager Partington capped an excellent first-half display from Quinn’s men when his exquisite finish made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time.

Boss Quinn made no fewer than six changes to his starting line-up in the wake of Cherries’ embarrassing cup catastrophe in midweek.

Danny Hollands and Mark Molesley were both suspended and Shaun Cooper injured, while Joel Ward, Warren Cummings and Josh McQuoid all dropped down to the bench.

Hamworthy-raised youngster Carl Preston was drafted in for his debut, the 17-year-old youth teamer handed a shock start in midfield.

Partington also made his full debut, while striker Alan Connell started for the first time since rejoining the club at the end of August.

Connell was partnered by Matt Tubbs, who was cup tied for the Blyth clash, while Ryan Garry and Igoe were both promoted from the bench.

Cherries made a bright start with Marvin Bartley testing Bury goalkeeper Wayne Brown with a low, skidding effort inside the opening two minutes.

And following a well-worked free-kick routine, Tubbs fired narrowly over the angle of post and crossbar after being picked out by Igoe’s delivery.

The Shakers’ best effort of the opening 20 minutes fell to midfielder Stephen Dawson whose fiercely-struck rising drive soared over the crossbar.

A speculative shot from Tubbs saw Brown scurry across his line to save before a slick move from Cherries almost paid handsome dividends.

After Partington had fed Tubbs, his clever through ball sent Connell free down the right. But after whipping in a dangerous cross, Preston just failed to make contact in front of goal. Cherries were rewarded for their first-half endeavours when they made the breakthrough six minutes before the interval.

Igoe was on hand to ram home the loose ball from around 12 yards after Preston’s hanging cross had only been half cleared by the Bury defence.

The midfielder’s low drive, which had been destined for the bottom corner, was diverted past Brown by the despairing Efe Sodje.

Cherries supporters were in dreamland on the stroke of half-time when Partington doubled the hosts’ lead with a delightful second goal.

The 18-year-old finished with aplomb, side-footing the ball past a stranded Brown after latching on to Tubbs’s fine assist.

Quinn’s charges, who have had their fair share of stick in recent weeks, received a deserved standing ovation as they left the pitch for a well earned cuppa.

Andy Morrell, one of two half-time substitutes for the visitors, saw his snapshot saved by Cherries goalkeeper Shwan Jalal at the start of the second half.

Bury skipper Paul Scott was booked for going through the back of Preston before Tubbs’s shot flashed past the upright.

Bartley followed Scott into Steve Tanner’s notebook, the referee’s patience finally snapping after he had appeared to take an instant dislike to the Cherries midfielder’s tackling.

Bury’s leading marksman Andy Bishop, who was well shackled by the Cherries defence, got his first shot away after 70 minutes, although Jalal saved comfortably.

The Cherries goalkeeper then distinguished himself when he pulled off a top-drawer save to push Richie Baker’s 25-yard drive over the crossbar.

Local boy Preston received a deserved standing ovation from the Dean Court faithful as he made way for Josh McQuoid in the closing stages.
