STEVE Fletcher has descri-bed Shaun Cooper’s injury bombshell as a “devastating blow” after Cherries’ captain was ruled out for up to six months.
It was yesterday revealed that the influential utility man faces a lengthy spell out of the team after undergoing surgery to cure a hip problem.
Cooper, who agreed a new one-year contract earlier this month, played through the pain barrier last term.
But he is now set to miss a large chunk of the forthcoming League Two campaign after being forced to go under the knife.
Cherries legend Fletcher, who rates Cooper extremely highly, didn’t seek to play down the news, admitting that the injury was a big setback for the club The veteran targetman told the Echo: “For me, I think he’s the best player in the team.
“We’re a far better team when he’s in it and I think we miss him terribly when he’s not.
“He’s very talented, comfortable on the ball and he’s got a massive chance in the game. He should be playing at a higher level but, thankfully for us, he’s not.
“We’re very fortunate to have a player like Shaun. I’m surprised he hasn’t gone a couple of divisions higher because I rate him that highly.
“I notice the difference when he’s not in the team. He would be my first name on the team sheet every week.”
Despite his disappointment at the news, Fletcher believes Cherries have a strong squad which can provide cover while Cooper is out of the side.
He said: “I’ve said all along that we have a squad where everyone can come in and do a job.
“I still think it’s strong enough, but he will be a loss.
“If you take one of the best players out of any team it’s a big loss and Shaun will be that for us until he gets fit.
“But it gives someone else a chance to come in.”
Cherries physio Steve Hard said: “It was a big operation and he will be out for a minimum of four months. “He is now on crutches for a month and will not be able to jog for three months, so in reality by the time he regains his match fitness, it will be around six months.”
Cooper made 44 appearances last season and performed well at right-back, centre-back and in central midfield during the campaign.
His injury will leave Cherries particularly light in the full-back position, with loan players Joel Ward and Rhoys Wiggins having returned to their parent clubs.
