LEE Thompson set a new Broadstone course record in the club's annual pro-am and put it all down to a red-hot putter that matched the warm weather.

"I holed nearly everything," admitted the Dudsbury touring player afterwards. "It was a pity my putter didn't start working for me the week before."

He was referring to the Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open on the European Tour.

Poor putting cost him a slot for the weekend. Two rounds of one-over-par 73 left him three short of the cut mark.

His round at Broadstone started with a birdie and he added four more at 5, 6, 8 and 9 to be out in five-under 31. When he added another at the 10th he had visions of a really spectacular score.

But he made his only bogey at the uphill par-four 12th although a three at 14 and two at 15 made it an eight-birdie round.

The previous record was shared by European Tour players Stuart Little and Gary Emerson during their West Region days in the South West Championship order of merit tournament in 1998.

Although they also shot 63, the course has since been extended as the 10th tee has been moved back 30 yards.

Parkstone's five-handicapper Colin Short played in the winning Fairhome Group alongside Martyn Thompson.

Although it will never be officially recorded, he carded six birdies, completed every hole and went round in a five-under-par 65.

Thompson, who logged 67, vouched for the remarkable round. "It was a joy to watch and made a massive difference to our team score," he said. Macmillan Cancer benefitted from the day.
