Alan Wong is on course for another medal challenge at next month’s National Age Group Championships in Sheffield following a golden hat-trick at regional level.

The 12-year-old Ferndown Otter added the 12yrs 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly titles at the South West Age Group Championships to the 100m freestyle gold he won a week earlier.

Wong, winner of silver and bronze medals at last year’s nationals, looked particularly impressive in the backstroke at Millfield, which saw him finish 20 metres ahead of his nearest rival.

His winning time of 2:23.46 was 10 seconds inside the national qualifying time and ranks him second in the GB rankings for 12-year-olds – trailing a boy who is 13 this week and will be in the next age group up in the nationals.

Wong is also ranked third nationally in the 100m butterfly, which he won in 1:08.28, fifth in the 100m freestyle and sixth in the 200m freestyle, in which his winning time was 2:13.05.

Bournemouth Dolphins’ Tom Kingham and Poole’s Harry Kemp each struck gold twice at Millfield.

Kingham added four medals to his regional tally with wins in the 11yrs 200m freestyle (2:21.19) and 200m individual medley (2:39.30), silver in the 400m medley (5:44.38) and bronze in the 100m breaststroke (1:27.52).

His times also qualified him for three events at the nationals.

Kemp recorded five top-five finishes in the 10yrs age group including gold in the 200 and 400m medley (2:56.03 and 6:13.11) and silver in the 100m butterfly (1:20.48).

He was second overall in his age group and contributed four to a total of 33 Poole club records set during the championships.

Dolphins’ Jamie and Jasmine Holmes between them added three more medals to the Bournemouth tally, Jamie winning the 12yrs 100m breaststroke in 1:18.16, his sister taking gold in the 11yrs 800m freestyle (10:25.36) and silver in the 200m free (2:24.53).

Team-mate Jack Burton completed a golden double in the breaststroke events as he won the 13yrs 100m final in 1:12.17.

Bradley Currie, swimming under the Dolphins banner although now with Poole, won his second gold of the championships in the 11yrs 800m freestyle (10:25.83).

So did Christchurch and New Milton Seagulls’ Peter Griffiths in the 13yrs 800m freestyle (9:36.21).

His team-mate Andrew Botros took bronze in the 11yrs 400m medley (5:46.68).

For Ferndown, silver medals went to Matthew Collins in the 10yrs 200m backstroke (2:49.39) and Luke Stuart in the 11yrs 100m breaststroke (1:26.96) and bronze to Lucy Kirkham in the 13yrs 200m freestyle (2:17.73).

Todd Price, now with Poole, added a bronze to the Otters tally in the 13yrs 400m medley (5:12.90) as he re-wrote his new club’s record books with 17 records in nine days.

Poole’s Emily Clarke, who broke seven club records, also won bronze in the 12yrs 800m freestyle (10:08.49) while Jessica Richens came third in the 10yrs 200m medley.

Dolphins’ medallists also included Jasmine Oliver-House with silver in the 10yrs 400m medley (6:19.22), Ryan McCormack with bronze in the 12yrs 200m freestyle (2:14.81) and Harry Thorpe, whose bronze-winning 200m freestyle time of 2:03.34 added to his programme for the nationals.

Georgia Harrison defied doctor’s orders to swim three events for Poole with a broken thumb.

Dolphins’ tally of 12 gold, four silver and nine bronze medals put them fifth in the medals table behind Bath, Plymouth Leander, Millfield and Taunton Deane.

Ferndown were ninth with four, seven and four, Seagulls 13th with three, zero and three and Poole 14th (two, four, three).
