TOP stopper Jason Harvell may have put himself in the shop window after admitting he would like another crack at the Southern League.

Harvell is arguably the best goalkeeper in local non-league circles and has enjoyed another fruitful campaign with Bournemouth Poppies.

The former Cherries apprentice is expected to be a target for several higher level clubs this summer, with Dorset rivals Poole and Wimborne likely to be among them.

Harvell has already played under Dolphins boss Tom Killick at Tatnam, while new Magpies manager Steve Cuss will doubtless be looking to bolster his squad at Cuthbury.

The 24-year-old played in the Southern League for Bashley following his release by Cherries in 2004 and also made one appearance for Division One South & West champions AFC Totton at the start of this season.

Potential suitors of Harvell are expected to be among the crowd when Poppies meet Winchester City in the Wessex League Cup final at AFC Totton’s Testwood Stadium tomorrow (3pm kick-off).

Harvell, a self-employed flooring fitter, told the Daily Echo: “I would like to play in the Southern League again at some point. I have still got the drive and want to play as high as I can.

“It can be difficult trying to tie in a busy work schedule with playing at that level because you have to apply yourself and give it a lot of time. Hopefully, I can sort that out and try to push on again.”

Harvell has been one of Poppies’ star performers this season with a cup final appearance capping an excellent league campaign which saw them compete in the upper reaches and eventually finish fifth.

The Victoria Park-based outfit will be looking to shake off their bridesmaid tag when they lock horns with Winchester City, having failed to win any silverware since joining the Wessex League as founder members in 1986.

Their best league finish was second in 1995, while they lost on penalties in the final of the Wessex League Cup to Lymington Town in 2007. Poppies were also runners-up in the Russell-Cotes Cup in 1996 and 2002.

Harvell added: “We were a little disappointed with the way the league season finished. We were hoping to come second or third but lost a crucial game against Bemerton. Generally though, we have had a really good season. The squad is made up of good individuals and the team spirit has always been good.”
