LUCKY charm Liam Feeney feels privileged to have featured in Cherries’ rapid rise and is determined to seal a place in Dean Court folklore.
The talented winger is aiming to close in on a memorable hat-trick when Cherries lock horns with Huddersfield Town in the League One play-off semi-finals.
Since his arrival from Salisbury City in the 2009 January transfer window, Feeney has helped the Dorset club avoid relegation into the Conference and finish as runners-up in League Two.
The Londoner has been involved in every third tier match this season as Cherries have given themselves a chance to make history with back-to-back promotions.
Feeney admitted Cherries were underdogs ahead of the two-legged tussle with the Terriers but insisted his team were desperate to win the battle for a Championship place.
Discussing the turnaround that has taken place since he joined Cherries, he said everything about the Dean Court outfit had “changed massively”.
Feeney told the Echo: “When I first came here, we were averaging crowds of about 4,000 and now we are averaging more than 7,000. That speaks for itself in two-and-a-half years.
“It is all good and we are all enjoying it. It has been a massive change in the right direction for the club and long may it continue.
“I am lucky to have been able to be a big part of what has happened in the past couple of years. I am very grateful for that and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Hopefully, we can finish this season on a high as well.
“We have got a great squad and this season is all about trying to make some history.
“In the past couple of years, we have achieved a lot for the club. We will try to do it again this year.”
Speaking at Cherries’ press call on Monday, Feeney added: “We have achieved something great for the club to be in the play-offs. It is fully deserved – we have been up there all season.
“It would be an even better season if we were to win promotion and it would be something that would be spoken about for years to come. We all know that and we are all focused on it.
“These opportunities, as a player, don’t come along very often in your career, so when they do you have got to grasp them. Hopefully, we will do that on Saturday.”
• Cherries have confirmed that unclaimed season ticket seats for the semi-final first leg will go on general sale at 9am today, but these tickets are expected to be limited. Tickets for the away leg are on sale for season ticket holders. General sale for this clash is expected to open at 11am on Sunday.
