GEORGE Webb highlighted the importance of the AFC Bournemouth connection after opting to join Wimborne ahead of two of their Southern League rivals.

The 20-year-old is believed to have rejected approaches from Poole Town and Gosport Borough in order to link up with Magpies manager Steve Cuss.

Webb was coached by Cuss, Cherries’ head of community sports trust, during his time in the Dean Court youth ranks.

And the free-scoring midfielder, who works as an estate agent for Mitchells in Penn Hill, revealed the chance to play under Cuss was key to his decision.

He told the Echo: “The main reason behind it was Steve. I have played under him before and know what he is about, so that was definitely something that came into the decision.

“I went to a few of their games last season and I saw the fans were great and that it was a well-run, professional club as well.

“It is also a step up and a step in the right direction.”

Webb, who made one first team appearance prior to his release from Cherries in October 2009, earned the Cuthbury switch after netting 22 goals in 41 Wessex League starts for Poppies and Hamworthy United last term.

He added: “I really enjoyed my time at Hamworthy with Simon Browne. He was great and helped me a lot.

“I am looking forward to testing myself at the next level up. Hopefully, I can continue my goalscoring form and send Wimborne in the right direction.”

Webb is one of three new players to agree terms with the Cuthbury outfit, along with Poppies utility man Scott Arnold and rookie Verwood defender Matt Dear, another former Cherries junior.

The captures come as a timely boost for Wimborne, who have seen star striker Scott Joyce switch allegiances to Dorset neighbours Poole.
