PLANS to increase the number of teams in the Premier Division of the National Arena League West from 18 to 24 could be reversed following objections from some of the clubs affected.

League members meet this Sunday to make the draw for the first round of the 2011 competition in October.

But first they must decide whether to stand by the decision made at a special general meeting in January to increase the Premier Division’s membership.

League secretary Sheila Bryant told the Daily Echo: “The plan was to increase the number to 24 teams but some of the clubs who find would themselves in the Premier Division as a result fear they would be swamped by the bigger clubs.”

The objectors are understood to be Truro City, Southwold and Welsh club Blaenau Gwent.

Whichever decision is made, Poole SC will join neighbours Swim Bournemouth in the Premier Division as champions of Division One.

Yeovil are also automatically promoted as runners-up to Poole and will be joined by Soundwell to replace Plymouth Leander B, who have withdrawn from the league.

If the league AGM opts for 24 teams, the next six finishers in Division One would be in line for promotion – which in turn would make Christchurch Seagulls the top ranked club in the second tier this autumn.
