PETE Smith had a day to forget as Bournemouth suffered a heavy defeat at Hook & Newnham Basics – not that skipper Alex Kennedy had any sympathy.

Opening bowler Smith arrived late for the clash with the Division Two leaders after having a minor shunt on the M4 en route to north Hampshire.

And after going for 72 off just seven overs as Hook piled up 350 for eight, Smith and his club-mates were on the receiving end of a 132-run reverse.

However, captain Kennedy saw the funny side when he said: “The good news was that there was no damage to either car and nobody sustained any injuries. However, the same could not be said for Pete’s bowling figures – he tried to blame it on whiplash!”

Ryan Scott (52), Kennedy (37) and Chris Ridley (33) helped Bournemouth reach 218 in reply to Hook’s formidable total.

New Milton’s revival continued following a facile five-wicket victory over Hartley Wintney on a belting batting track at Fernhill.

Skipper Eric Linge felt New Milton had pulled up trees to restrict the visitors to 231 for six before his own contribution |with the bat saw them home comfortably.

Linge said: “We showed a maturity with the bat that had been lacking all season.

“On a 250-plus wicket, we bowled very well to restrict them and then showed how good a wicket it was by winning convincingly.”

Dan Adlem (61), Linge (48), Josh Hill (45) and Lee Beck (35*) all starred as New Milton made it back-to-back wins.
