DORSET captain Giles Legg is determined to hand back the wooden spoon after tomorrow’s final round of South West Championship matches at Saunton.
Consecutive defeats against Somerset yesterday and champions-elect Wiltshire today have seen Dorset slide down the round robin standings.
“Any one of three teams could still end up with the dreaded wooden spoon,” explained Legg, whose team face Gloucestershire on Friday.
“It’s been tough the past two days after a promising start. Our main objective now, however, is not to finish last for a second successive year,” added Legg.
Dorset had won and drawn their first two matches against Cornwall and Devon respectively.
Wiltshire, meanwhile, have secured the match play shield with a day to spare.
Highlight of the 9½ to 4½ loss, from a Dorset perspective, was Ben Harvey’s singles victory against Tom Ruddle.
The Ferndown star was five down with just six holes remaining, but managed to win them all for a spectacular one-hole success.
Dorset boys champion Harry Mitchell also had cause for celebration. The 18-year-old claimed the scalp of Wiltshire captain Kevin Phillips with a 4 and 3 success on his South West debut.
Dorset’s only other singles winner was Daniel Bishop (3 and 1 over Dave Bauer), while Legg and Jon Welch were the only winners in the afternoon foursomes against Phillips and Thomas Burley.
Tomorrow’s other matches: Somerset v Wiltshire, Cornwall v Devon.
