SWEDISH sensation Freddie Lindgren believes he and Chris Holder could emerge as major World Championship contenders in the next two years.
The young guns have both made promising starts to the 2011 Grand Prix series and will be aiming to continue their form in tonight’s Danish GP in Copenhagen.
Pirates star Holder is fifth in the standings on 28 points, while Lindgren is seventh, just two points adrift of his counterpart.
The pair did battle at Wimborne Road on Wednesday when Holder won the clash of the number ones by helping Poole to a resounding 56-36 success over Wolverhampton Wolves.
Lindgren has been impressed by the Australian’s form this term and thinks the duo could soon be ready to challenge the experienced stars such as reigning world champion Tomasz Gollob and series leader Greg Hancock.
In an interview with the Echo, Lindgren said: “Chris has done really well so far this season, for Pirates and in the Grand Prix. He is a tough competitor.
“He is a couple of years younger than me but we have a similarity in our careers in that we haven’t really made a big step straight away.
“We have improved year after year and taken it more steadily, and I think that is good for both of us.
“He has been going well and I haven’t been doing badly either, so I think the two of us might be challenging for the world title in a couple of years.
“There are a few other young riders coming up as well, so we will have to wait and see.”
Holder and Lindgren, who is top of the Elite League averages, have both been tipped for big things on the global speedway stage.
But the level-headed 25-year-old is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
Lindgren said: “A lot of riders get tipped to be world champions but there are not many that make it.
“In the past 10 years, I think there have only been four riders that have been world champions. It is really hard to get there but I am sure Chris is pushing for it and I am pushing for it.
“Greg Hancock has been in fantastic form this year, probably the best for a lot of years. He is riding with a lot of confidence and it is the same with Gollob.
“Hopefully, some of us younger guys can come through pretty soon.”
