TWO of the longest-surviving county records went for a Burton as Dorset breaststroking moved into uncharted waters at the South West Age Group Championships.

Swim Bournemouth’s Jack Burton carved seven seconds off not only his own 200m breaststroke personal best but the Dorset senior and junior long course records held by Ferndown’s Seth Chappels since 1998.

His time of 2:27.58 left his old rival Rio Kurihara 1.4sec adrift in the 14yrs final in the Millfield swimmer’s home pool.

Three of the first four were from Dorset and all recorded national qualifying times.

Poole’s Dan Speers was also inside Chappels’ record to claim the bronze with Noah Vides fourth in one of his last swims for Bournemouth following his move to Poole.

Burton’s time makes him the fastest 14-year-old in Britain but his July 7 birthday means he will be one of the youngest in a 15-16yrs age band at next month’s National Youth Championships rather than the oldest in the age groups.

It does however make him a likely qualifier for the Olympic trials in March and a contender for the European Junior Championships in 2013 and 2014.

Burton said: “I’m not sure if I’ll make the youth final but the Olympic trials are a realistic target.”

The Holmes family scored a hat-trick of second places for Bournemouth, Jasmine winning silver medals in the 12yrs 100 and 400m freestyle in 1:03.57 and 4:49.70, brother Jamie taking silver in the 13yrs 200m breaststroke in 2:44.79.

Ben Samuel grabbed another silver in the 10yrs 100m freestyle (1:12.24) and Jasmin Oliver-House took bronze in the 11yrs 200m butterfly (2:59.58).

Bournemouth’s Tom Kingham, swimming for Millfield, won bronze in the 12yrs 200m butterfly in 2:22.50.

Other Bournemouth finalists: 10yrs Morgan Long 7th 100m free. 11yrs Matthew Collins 4th 100m free, 6th 100m back, 6th 400m free; Lucy Brain 4th 100m free; 7th Grace Kingsley 200m back; Jasmin Oliver-House 5th 400m free. 13yrs Christy Cole 6th 100m free 1:04.48, 8th 200m back; Ryan McCormack 4th 100m free; Jazmine Hepburn 7th 400m free.

• Luke Raggett added his name to Swim Bournemouth’s youth championship qualifiers with a long course time of 2:10.21 at the Bracknell and Woking Open Meet at Aldershot.
