MAXIMUM man Chris Holder turned in a world class display to destroy Swindon Robins on their own patch last night.
Holder was unbeaten at Blunsdon as Pirates claimed their second win on the road this week following Monday’s hugely impressive 46-44 triumph at Belle Vue in the league.
But for all the tension in that meeting at Kirky Lane, this cup clash in Wiltshire was all but over by the halfway stage.
Pirates were simply impenetrable and with newly-crowned British champion Scott Nicholls only managing three points from four rides for the hosts, Holder and Ward, who scored paid 15, simply filled their boots.
Simon Stead and Jesper B Monberg did their best to stem the flow, but with every member of Neil Middleditch’s team bagging either a race win or a paid second place, the Robins had no answer.
Holder, quite simply, was on fire and could have ridden through the night and still wouldn’t have been beaten - even with an apparent neck injury the Aussie was bemoaning on social networking site Twitter before the meeting.
Pirates got off to a flyer as Holder and Dennis Andersson claimed a 5-1 in the opening race against Nicholls and James Wright.
Jason Doyle then stormed to the front in heat three with Davey Watt in second as Pirates’ night just got better and better.
Holder claimed another heat win in race five, before Nicholls could only finish third in the black and white helmet as Robins’ tactical gamble flopped in heat six.
Monberg was next out as a tactical rider for the hosts in race eight, but he, like Nicholls, could not find a way past the Pirates pairing – Andersson and guest Claus Vissing this time banking a 5-1 to make the score 35-13.
The visitors were dealt a blow after Renat Gafurov, following a heat nine spill, was ruled out of the remainder of the meeting with concussion.
Ward, though, continued his domination by storming to three points in the re-run.
Watt, after a last place in heat 10, was back on form in race 12, seeing off Cory Gathercole’s challenge to increase Poole’s advantage to 49-23.
And the story of a one-sided meeting was printed and packaged when Holder and Ward got the better of Nicholls and Stead in a dominant heat 13.
Monberg finally secured the home side a race win in heat 14, but that was as good as it got.
Holder completed his five-ride maximum haul alongside Ward in heat 15 as Pirates racked up yet another 5-1.
The double, or treble if you include the Elite League Pairs, is very much on.
