IN-FORM Chris Holder has vowed to go all out to defend his British Grand Prix title – but has warned Pirates fans not to expect too much from him on the world championship battle ground.
Poole Castle Cover spearhead Holder claimed his maiden series title in the white-hot atmosphere of the Millennium Stadium last year.
But despite going into tomorrow’s fifth world championship round in Wales on the back of two full maximums for Pirates, Holder insisted defending his crown would be far from a piece of cake.
The 23-year-old told the Echo: “I’m feeling good and everything is going well. I’ve been riding well in the leagues in Poland and in England, but it’s a different story when you get to the GPs.
“We’ll see what happens, but I’m really looking forward to the weekend.
“If people say they aren’t nervous then they are lying. I am always nervous before a big meeting and it’s the same this weekend.
“I’ll just try to enjoy it, though. No matter what the result at Cardiff, I have won it once so I am stoked with that. If I can do it again, I’ll be even happier.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be going hard at it trying to win.
“I know how hard it is, though, and I don’t take it for granted. If I am in a final, I’m almost as happy as I would be if I won.”
Holder is nicely placed at fifth in this year’s championship standings after a semi-final spot in Prague, third place in Copenhagen and a rain-affected victory in Gothenburg.
And with the Millennium Stadium drop-in track likely to be a similar make-up to Copenhagen, Holder is hopeful of another final place – at least.
He added: “All the drop-in tracks are pretty similar because they are made of the same stuff.
“Hopefully, the track will be good for some racing. The one in Copenhagen was really good and we could race on it without getting too out of control.
“Copenhagen was one of the best tracks in the series this year so I’m hoping it will be pretty similar to there. Last year Cardiff was really nice and it had a little bit of grip on the outside, but you could race on the inside as well.
“If they can get it pretty much the same, it will be great.”
