AN evening sortie to Southbourne Beach produced a personal best small-eyed-ray for Shaun Miller from Northbourne that tipped the scales down to exactly 9-0.

Miller used sandeel fished around the 70-mark to tempt the specimen that was weighed and returned alive. It was caught on his first cast and was the only bite he had throughout the session.

• A mid-channel sortie aboard the Poole-based boat ‘Silver Spray,’ skippered by Andy Cumming, produced a very tasty 5lb brill for Mark Edwards, one of our much sought after but unusual members of the flatfish family.

• The opening day of the annual coarse season on local rivers was something of a damp squid but there was a 13-0 barbel banked from the Throop Fishery.

Scott Mosely also got in on the act banking five chub with the best two fish weighing 6-2 and 6-9.

On the Royalty Fishery, Rob Martin from Ferndown banked a personal best chub, weighing 7-1.

• The Poole charters skippers annual species four-man team open attracted 28 teams with 35 differing species recorded.

The day’s top team was Ocean Eleven who finished with 36 points, while fishing from ‘Rocket’ skippered by Trevor Small.

The Isle of Wight-based Scotties team came second with 35 points, while fishing aboard ‘Blue Duo’ followed by Kent Boys Plus One team with 34 points while fishing from ‘Strongbow’.

• Some quality fish were recorded during the third round of the four-a-side inter-club Neptune League which was fished at Hengistbury Head.

Jeffery Fisk, who was representing Bournemouth and District, beached a 12-4 smoothhound.

Other fish of note included a tasty 1-7.5 sole for Pete Christopher, while Reg Clough landed a 15oz pouting.

The rest of the catch was made up of dogfish, ballan wrasse, plaice, silver eels and mackerel.

The next match will be held at Highcliffe on July 11 with fishing from 7.30pm to 10.30pm where mackerel, smoothhound, bream and gurnard can be expected to supply most of the action. • Competitors sampled some brisk action during the final round of the Allan’s Marine six-match series which was held at Hayling where smoothhound, dogfish, black bream, pout, silver eels and red gurnard figured in the catch.

The winner on the night was Duncan Beck with 30-10. Included in his catch was the night’s heaviest fish, an 11-6 smoothhound.

Dave Jones came second with 9-0.5, followed by Kim Andrews with 8-13.

The overall series winner was John Brown with 11 penalty points followed by Mick Goodger 13pts, Adrian Carter 24pts and then Lee Barstow and Pete Farrell who both chalked up 27pts.

A new midweek pegged open series starts on July 12 at Hillhead with fishing from 8pm to midnight.

The catch-and-release event is judged by weight to length conversion charts.

NEW MILTON AC: The monthly championship match was held at Dandy Ford Fishery where Richard Wyatt took the honours with a 68-2 net of carp taken on the pole to soft pellet.

CHRISTCHURCH AC: A midweek evening match held at the club’s Holtwood water produced a win for Chris Albiston with a 35-8 catch of carp and skimmers taken on the pole to corn closely followed by Jem Turner with a 34-10 net of carp.

SWANAGE & DISTRICT SAC: The President’s Cup shore completion was fished in Durlston Bay where Will Chellingworth was the top performer with a catch of wrasse worth 163pts followed by Graham Woods with 110pts.

BOURNEMOUTH & DISTRICT SAA: Steve Bishop romped to victory during a West Solent roving shore competition after beaching a brace of smoothhound weighing 14-8. His best fish tipped the scales down to 10-12.

LYMINGTON & DISTRICT SFC: The action was disappointing during the monthly Shingle Bank League fixture held at Milford where Jason Voller came out on top with a solitary smoothhound weighing 3-6.5.
