BATTLE-weary Kevin Spurgeon is looking forward to a welcome break before he returns to ‘fighting mode’ for The Senior Open Championship later this month.
Spurgeon has a fortnight off competitive golf before he locks horns with major champions Bernhard Langer, Tom Watson and Ian Woosnam at Walton Heath on July 21-24.
In the past three weeks, Spurgeon has competed in Germany, Holland and Switzerland, while nursing arm and back injuries.
“It’s great to be back home,” admitted Spurgeon, who won 1,050 euros for finishing tied 42nd in the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open in Switzerland on Sunday.
“We have really enjoyed our travels, but I need to put my feet up and take rest for a week.
“I’ve been plagued with injuries recently, so I will chill out for a while and return to my normal fighting mode next week,” added Spurgeon.
“Despite the arm and back problems, I am playing well enough but nothing has dropped for me on the greens.”
Spurgeon was left to rue a double-bogey, bogey finish to this final round in Switzerland, which denied him a top-30 finish.
The 56-year-old Ferndown star began the weekend in joint 12th place after an opening two-under-par 68 but slipped down the leader board each day after rounds of 70 and 72.
Spurgeon will be playing in his fifth Senior Open at Walton Heath. His best finish was tied 43rd at Sunningdale in 2009.
