FORMER PGA Cup player Jon Bevan and West Region captain Michael Watson are the best of pals, working together at Wessex Golf Centre at Weymouth and usually travelling together to tournaments.
But on the course that friendship between the Bournemouth Alliance members ends and both go out determined to beat each other.
Watson dominated the Region in June with three wins. Now Bevan has thrown down the gauntlet July in sensational style with two wins in three days.
He started at the Gwalia Housing Trust Pro-Am at Langland Bay with a five-under-par 65 that managed to edge out Watson by one stroke.
Then he travelled to Cornwall to top the Rotary Club of St Austell Bay pro-am at Carlyon Bay.
The Wessex pair were late starters at the South Wales course where the views over the sea are stunning. They had to battle against a strengthening wind that did not bother morning starters Welsh trio Kevin Davies (Virginia Park), Martin Stimson (Ashburnham) and 2010 PGA West Region Order of Merit Champion Richard Dinsdale (Parc) who tied for third on 67.
The 22nd Charity Pro-Am, sponsored by Cowlin Construction, was another success. It helps raise vital funds for the South Wales charity that does so much to help disadvantaged and disabled individuals.
It was also a successful day for the third member of the professional staff at Wessex Golf Centre as Fern Grimshaw also finished among the cheque-winners.
Bevan, who failed to get through final qualifying for The Open, scattered the field in Cornwall with a seven-under-par 65 at Carlyon Bay, finishing three clear of Paul Hendriksen (Dinnaton) who was one ahead of Gary Lenaghan (Trevose). Race to Woodbury Park leader Chris (Exeter) and Chris Benians (Hayle Golf Range) were the only other players to beat par on 71.
Bevan made birdies at the first and fourth before dropping his only shot at the par-three fifth. He made his score on the return nine with six birdies and three pars to be back in 31.
