WIMBORNE Road captain Davey Watt hailed superstar duo Chris Holder and Darcy Ward but insisted every member of Pirates’ table-topping crew deserved credit.

Watt has helped guide Poole to the Elite League summit after an exceptional start to the 2011 campaign.

Unbeaten on home territory in the top flight all season, Pirates have displayed their dominance by pulling clear of a chasing pack led by South Coast rivals Eastbourne.

Top guns Holder and Ward have dominated most of the headlines this term.

Pirates skipper Watt, who has been in fine form since overcoming a dip earlier in the season, is keen to underline the importance of the whole team.

Speaking before Wednesday night’s demolition of King’s Lynn, Watt told the Echo: “Of course, Chris and Darcy are important. They are two of the best riders in the world and we are lucky enough to have them at Poole.

“But at the same time, Dennis Andersson, Jason Doyle, Renat Gafurov and our reserves are all scoring points every week and, without them, our efforts would be wasted.

“It is a team sport and I don’t really want anybody to focus on any individuals in the team.

“While those guys are going great and it is fantastic for the team, I think everybody in the team deserves congratulations because of their efforts so far. Hopefully, they can keep it up.

“It is quite easy for me (as captain) because everybody in this team is so determined and I don’t really need to do anything to fire them up.

“They are all here to do a job and are all very focused.”

Pirates’ efforts this year have been similar to last season, when the Dorset outfit also topped the standings, only for the silverware to be torn from their grasp by Coventry in the play-offs.

But Watt says his men are determined to avoid a repeat of that agonising near miss and believes the make-up of the 2011 team will stand them in good stead.

The Australian added: “Our plan is to win this year. We know we can’t win the league in June, but we are all pushing and trying everything we can to be fast.

“We know that last year, it was two bad meetings that cost us the championship and we know that could very well happen again this year. But we are doing everything we can to make sure that come those two meetings, we are prepared, focused, ready and want it as badly as we should do.”
