CHERRIES defender Mitchell Nelson is hoping a switch in positions could result in a change of fortunes.

Nelson opened the floodgates when he bagged Cherries’ first goal in their 10-0 pre-season romp at Hamworthy Recreation on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old netted with a fine glancing header and partnered new signing Adam Barrett at the heart of the Cherries defence.

Nelson endured a frustrating first full season in the pro ranks after being plucked by former boss Eddie Howe from Ryman League Tooting & Mitcham last summer.

He was named on the bench three times for the first team but failed to get a taste of league action and also spent spells on loan with Eastbourne Borough and Lewes.

Despite initially operating at right-back, Nelson has been converted to central defence under Lee Bradbury and Steve Fletcher.

“I learned a lot and last season was a great experience,” said Nelson. “It was frustrating as well but it was down to me to try to impress the manager.

“I had high hopes when I first arrived here but maybe I was a bit too eager. It was a massive step from non-league and it took time to adjust. You have to be patient and take your chance when it comes along.

“I played a few reserve games and was on the bench for the first team. That helped me settle into the squad and now I want to break into the team.

“The loan spells helped me get some games under my belt and going out was good experience. I’ve got to try to break through and cement a place this season.

“I feel fitter and stronger and prefer playing at centre-back. It has always been my natural position, although I would play anywhere the manager asked me to.

“The manager and Steve Fletcher have been teaching me and telling me what I need to do to get into the team. Hopefully, I can take it on and start to kick on.”
