CRAWLEY Town have confirmed that Cherries have signed Matt Tubbs for a “substantial but undisclosed fee” – with the transfer understood to have smashed the Dean Court record.

The Daily Echo exclusively reported earlier today that Cherries were on the verge of completing a deal for the Verwood-raised frontman.

And in the past few minutes, League Two Crawley revealed that Tubbs had agreed to join Lee Bradbury’s promotion hopefuls.

Although the financial details have not been officially reported, the Echo understands Cherries and Crawley agreed a total package in the region of £800,000.

Cherries’ previous record purchase stood at £210,000 – which they splashed out to sign Gavin Peacock in 1989.

Cherries last week had a bid for Tubbs – believed to have been worth around £500,000 – rejected by Crawley.

But following Tubbs’s match-winning goal in Crawley’s FA Cup giant-killing of Hull City on Saturday, Cherries renewed their interest and landed their top strike target.
