BOSS Lee Bradbury reflected on Cherries’ record-breaking shopping spree and insisted: We spent wisely.

The Cherries manager made his seventh signing of the transfer window by completing a deal for Huddersfield Town winger Donal McDermott ahead of last night’s 11pm deadline.

Former Cherries loan star McDermott penned a three-and-a-half year contract after the two clubs had agreed an undisclosed fee, believed to have been in the region of £175,000.

Although the transfer fees for Cherries’ seven new recruits have not been officially confirmed, McDermott’s arrival is believed to have taken Cherries’ estimated January spending to in excess of £1.6million.

However, Bradbury hit out at the suggested figures and expressed his delight at Cherries’ business during the month.

He told the club website: “I am very mindful of the size of the squad but, at the same time, I want to have good strength in depth and we have to get that balance right.

“People are still saying about the money we have spent, but we are still in the black from the players that we lost last year.

“Some of the figures being thrown around for what we have spent on Matt (Tubbs) and Donal are way off-track.

“We have spent money but we have spent it wisely and have brought in two very good players this week for what we have paid.

“I take a lot of pride in signing good players and good people for this football club and it is not something I take lightly.

“That is why it has taken so long to get our targets. We put in good bids and got knocked back and it takes time, but I was determined to get the players I wanted and we have done that now.”

Bradbury added: “This is the end of the rebuilding and I feel the jigsaw is complete.

“Donal McDermott is a very creative player who can play on either wing or in the hole, and he gives me another quality option and that is really important. He works hard for the team and has a lot of qualities and for me to bring in someone like him is exciting.”

McDermott said he “had a lot of love” for Cherries after helping the club reach the play-offs last season.

He told the club website: “I have come here to fight for my place. There is an unbelievable squad here and it is down to me to work hard and get myself in the side.

“I am so happy to be back here and my aim is to help the club as much as I can. The quality is here to have success this season.”

As part of McDermott’s transfer, he is ineligible to play against the Terriers this season, including in potential play-off fixtures.
