BOURNEMOUTH took a giant step towards a place in English rugby's fourth tier with a thrilling 27-26 win over title rivals Chinnor this afternoon.
In a dramatic clash at Chapel Gate, Lions held on in the closing stages having almost let slip a commanding lead.
Chinnor fly-half James Cathcart, who had kicked 16 of his team's points, dragged a penalty agonisingly wide with just seconds remaining to spark jubilant scenes among Bournemouth players and supporters.
Lions dominated the first half and were 21-9 ahead at the interval before Chinnor produced a fine fightback.
The Bournemouth hero was stand-off Dan Pollard. He scored a try in a 22-point haul, while Robbie Searle also crossed for the hosts in front of a bumper crowd.
The victory put Bournemouth in pole position to claim the National Three South West title and the division's one automatic promotion berth.
