YOUNGSTERS from Grange Athletic were given a lesson from some elder statesmen when the club’s dads took to the field.
Fathers from the club’s mini-soccer set-up took on their youth football counterparts – watched by their cringing children!
In an even first-half, there were few clear-cut chances, but the youth football dads eventually broke the deadlock when Bruce Ruegg coolly slotted the ball past Craig Haynes.
But the mini fathers rallied and bagged a deserved equaliser Joe Sewell volleyed home from 20 yards following some impressive midfield work from Paul Allsopp and Steve Munn.
The youth football XI took the lead for a second time after the break when Danny Tabor finished smartly after being set up by Chris Smith.
But the mini-soccer dads refused to give in and restored parity 10 minutes from time when Jimmy Urrah’s fizzing drive beat Chris Matthews all ends up.
With legs tiring, the dads gave extra-time a miss and proceeded straight to penalties to settle the clash.
And it was the mini-soccer dads who held their nerve to win 4-3 on the spot-kicks.
Roy King claimed the man-of-the-match honours for the minis, while Christa Doe took home the match ball for the youth football dads.
