DORSET skipper Tom Hicks says Glyn Treagus and Josh Lawrence have both hit the ground running in their respective bids to erase the memory of an indifferent season.
Treagus and Lawrence shared a second-wicket stand of 123 to underpin Dorset’s convincing victory over a Dorset League XI in a friendly at Dean Park seven days ago.
Opener Treagus, 37, hit a boundary-laden century and 21-year-old Lawrence a classy 71 – with both showing encouraging signs having struggled for form and consistency last season.
The pair will again feature when Dorset continue their warm-up campaign against Hampshire seconds on the Rose Bowl nursery ground tomorrow.
Hicks told the Daily Echo: “It was good to see Glyn in the runs. He has worked really hard over the winter on his fitness and his batting. He struggled a little last year and is desperate to make an impact. If he is in form, he is one of the best players around so we are really keen to get him on his game.
“It was nice to see Josh back. He has had his fair share of ups and downs and was in and out of the team. He wasn’t particularly settled last season. His batting, his fitness and his approach to the game were all very positive and, if we can get him going in the right direction, he could be a really powerful player at the top of the order.”
Hicks added: “My philosophy this year is very much going to be about letting the guys express themselves. I think that will take us a long way because we have got a good mix of experience and youth and, if we play without fear, I think we will be competitive.”
Hicks said a number of the Dorset League XI players had also franked their credentials to acquit themselves in the Minor Counties Championship.
“Mansoor Khan and Tom Jacques, in particular, were impressive,” said Hicks.
“We had a selection meeting during the week and are all excited about the depth and talent we have got.”
Hicks was also full of praise for Dean Park groundsman Derek Tapper and highlighted the excellent pitch he had prepared for the contest.
