LEVEL-headed international prospect Richard Galloway is vowing to keep his feet firmly on the ground as he aims to launch his rugby career.

The Bournemouth Rugby Club teenager earned his first England caps when he represented the country’s under-16s in victories over Italy away and at home against Wales earlier this month.

A pupil at Bournemouth School for Boys, Richard scored a try in the 39-35 win over Wales at Wellington College in Berkshire.

The wing rose through the age groups at Bournemouth before earning county and regional honours and eventually winning an England place after attending trials.

Richard is involved in the development set-up at Bath Rugby Club and is hoping to continue his progress.

He told Echo Youth Sport: “I have to keep going and keep working. My feet are firmly on the ground and I know that playing for England under-16s doesn’t guarantee playing rugby. But with that in mind, I will endeavour to do well in the sport.

“I also know that I have got to do well at school because if I were to get injured, I would have to have academic things to fall back on.”

Richard, who lives in Bournemouth, was quick to pay tribute to all of his coaches.

He says they have played a vital role in his fledgling career, with father Chris also a key influence.

Richard added: “I know David Dunn (Bournemouth director of rugby) quite well and he has been very helpful and has given me a lot of advice.

“I am training hard at Bath and with Dorset & Wilts and Bournemouth.

“Simon and George, my coaches at Bournemouth, have given me tremendous support, along with the team manager Guy.

“I have had a lot of support from my school and they came to support me and watch me play. It was amazing and a good experience. My teachers, especially the PE staff, have encouraged and supported me, both on and off the pitch.

“I also use the gym and track at Bournemouth Athletic Club about twice a week.

“The facility is on our doorstep and is run by volunteers. I have been coached by numerous athletic coaches there, all of whom have been great.

“All my coaches have significantly helped me, especially my dad Chris. He is an osteopath and a handy man to have around as the game gets more physical.”
