BOURNEMOUTH under-15s won the Dorset and Wilts Cup, beating Woot-ton Bassett 7-0 in monsoon conditions in Devizes.
With nearly all the possession and territory, the Lions were encamped in Bassett’s 22 for most of the game.
But Bassett’s mighty defence stood firm and kept the score to 0-0 at the interval.
“We knew we had to up the tempo and change tack,” said head coach Rob Thomson.
The team also received a pep talk from first-team lock and fellow coach Callum Forest who told them to “keep it tight and hit the fringes.”
It proved sound advice as the forwards mauled and rucked their way to Bassett’s line.
And the deadlock was broken when Jake Gillard powered over into the corner for the only try of the game.
His try was converted by Conor Dunne with an impressive kick from the touchline. Lions defence remained rock solid as Bassett struggled to mount a fight back in worsening weather conditions.
Thomson added: “Bassett played the game with great spirit and determination and the Lions coaches hope they have a successful season next year.
“This win is a reflection of the success we have had at the club this season, through all of the age groups and teams up to the championship-winning first team.”
