My name is David Clark-Wheeler but most people know me as Dave Wheeler. I’ll be carrying the Olympic flame though Boscombe on Saturday, July 14. You’ll have to get up early to see me as my ‘slot’ is shortly after 8am where the route of the torch comes from Manor Road, around the Sovereign Centre, and then along the main Christchurch Road though Boscombe.
I work for the housing department at Bournemouth Borough Council but I also help out at the flying club on Saturdays. I was nominated by my libraries colleagues who got me talking on the various stunts I’ve performed for charity over the years.
These include a bungee jump and abseils from the water tower at Poole; from the Bournemouth Balloon and face-first from the Poole Hospital Nurses Building.
For the last two years I’ve helped raise money for Help for Heroes and Julia’s House. I’ve also shaved my eyebrows off, had my head shaved, been involved in a charity bus pull and I ran a 10k race dressed as Jimmy Saville! I also produced a children’s story for Bournemouth Big Green Fort-night and took part in a library event to promote this to children.
Before this I wrote ‘We Can Do Anything’ which is a tale of using your imagination to inspire fun and play for small children under my writing name of David George Mathews.
I’m extremely honoured to have been given the prestigious task of carrying the Olympic Flame, which represents global unity and celebration.
