Cherries could resurrect their traditional pre-season friendly with Hamworthy Recreation, once they have finalised their fixture list for the new campaign.
Some supporters jumped the gun following suggestions Cherries had shelved plans to play the Dorset Premier League outfit this year.
A curtain-raiser to Cherries’ warm-up campaign for many years, the clash has proved popular with supporters and also financially beneficial to the non-league club – to the tune of around £3,000 every season.
Under previous managers Sean O’Driscoll, Kevin Bond, Jimmy Quinn, Eddie Howe and Lee Bradbury, Cherries often utilised the playing and catering facilities at Hamworthy Club and played their opening friendly at Magna Road.
However, for much of last season, Cherries used New Milton Town’s Fawcett’s Field headquarters for reserve and youth matches, while the squad was catered for at Dean Court following training at Canford School.
As a result, Cherries initially told Hamworthy Recreation officials that it appeared “unlikely” they would be able to accommodate them with their regular slot in the pre-season schedule.
And while the news prompted criticism from some supporters, a Cherries spokesperson said the club had still to finalise its fixtures and that Hamworthy Recreation was still under consideration for a visit from either the first team or the newly-created development squad.
Hamworthy Recreation secretary Ray Willis told the Daily Echo: “AFC Bournemouth have done us proud for years. They have given us good service and we have no divine right for them to come to us every year. Hopefully they will try to fit us in.”
Meanwhile, Cherries have announced friendlies against Premier League new boys Reading (August 4) and Championship outfits Cardiff City (August 7) and Bristol City (August 11).
