ASSISTANT boss Shaun Brooks is convinced Lewis Grabban will enhance Cherries’ attacking options and prove a big success at Dean Court.
Brooks last night gave his verdict on Grabban after the Rotherham United forward had agreed terms on a move to Dorset.
Grabban is today set to sign a three-year contract and follow Josh McQuoid as Cherries’ second signing of the close season, subject to the completion of a medical and the necessary paperwork.
Versatile Grabban, who can play on the wing or as a striker, held discussions at Dean Court yesterday after Rotherham had accepted an offer from Cherries.
If Cherries can finalise the deal, they will have fended off competition from third tier rivals Crawley Town and former boss Sean O’Driscoll, who last week reportedly had unsuccessful talks with Grabban.
The former Crystal Palace and Millwall man netted 18 League Two goals for the Millers – and Brooks is confident he can provide Cherries with some of the firepower they lacked last term.
Brooks told the club website: “We have followed Lewis’s career over the past two or three years but it really took off last year when he went to Rotherham and scored a lot of goals.
“Similarly to Josh, he can play out wide or up front, he is strong, quick and has good feet. He is willing and eager to improve as well.
“He believes in what we are trying to do as a football club, so he has got all the right attributes that we are looking for in a player that can move this club forward.
“Everything has been agreed now – he needs to have a medical and we will have him as part of our squad for pre-season.”
Brooks added: “We recognised that we didn’t score enough goals last season.
“The teams in the top six score upwards of 75 goals a season and we scored around one a game.
“It is an area we need to improve in. Defensively, we are sound, but we needed to get more goals in the team.
“The two signings – Josh and Lewis – will help us play how we want to play in terms of energy and intensity.”
Coincidentally, the development came after Rotherham manager Steve Evans had last month tried to take Matt Tubbs in the opposite direction, only for Cherries to reject Rotherham’s offer. At the time, Evans said his chairman would decide whether the Millers would renew their interest in the Verwood-raised hotshot.
Discussing Grabban, Evans told themillers.co.uk: “Bournemouth conducted their business in an exemplary manner, they are a club that I have a lot of respect for and I am sure that Lewis and Bournemouth will be a partnership that will flourish.
“In the games that I have been the manager of Lewis, he has sparkled and he leaves Rotherham United with mine and the club’s best wishes.”
