WHEN will it end? Not any time soon the way this record-breaking Pirates team is performing.

Even promoter Matt Ford, not shy in singing his riders’ praises, must be lost for words by the length of table-topping Poole Coastal Aluminium’s unbeaten run.

Now stretching to 13 matches this term, the Dorset side continue to make a mockery of the so-called experts, many of whom predicted they would be a play-off team at best this season.

It should be noted that the reigning Elite League champions have not had it easy in the past 48 hours – Dennis Andersson was out injured and Adrian Miedzinski was racing in his Polish homeland, with both men also absent during Pirates’ Knockout Cup win against Wolves on Wednesday.

Of course, Ford was shrewd by bringing in the impressive Kyle Howarth to double-up with Todd Kurtz earlier in the campaign, while his guest booking of the aggressive Ty Proctor in place of Andersson at the Showground last night was inspired.

Having already racked up away wins at Wolverhampton (three times), Lakeside, Birmingham and Coventry, it could take Alun Rossiter’s Swindon Robins to break the Pirates stranglehold when the sides meet twice next week.

But even the ultra-confident Rosco must be quivering at the prospect of having to stop Darcy Ward in his tracks.

Ward led the way again last night with an 18-point full maximum, but the meeting was also about decent returns from both Ricky Kling and Proctor.

Pirates notched three heat advantages from the opening four races on a rapid Showground surface and were leading by eight after Ward took the chequered flag in the third staging of heat four.

The hosts showed the same spirit that had seen them impress in a 50-39 defeat at Wimborne Road on May 23, though, and closed the gap to two points thanks to Jesper B Monberg and Kenneth Bjerre in heats six and eight. Kling then came to the party in heat nine to hold off quick Dane Michael Jepsen Jensen and Swede Linus Sundstrom. Although Ludvig Lindgren packed up, it was all about maintaining what was now a slender lead.

Enter the Turbo Twins.

Proctor was jet-propelled from the tapes in heat 10 and was soon joined by Ward, who expertly led his fellow Aussie to a 5-1 which increased the visitors’ lead to six.

Chris Holder then surged past the out-of-form Oliver Allen after the Brit had opened the door on the back straight of lap one in race 11. Kling clung on to third and the 4-2 made the lead eight points once again.

Although Lindgren again suffered mechanical gremlins at the end of the first lap in heat 12, Ward cruised to victory to maintain the Dorset side’s advantage going into the business end of the clash.

Howarth was left trailing as rider replacement for Miedzin-ski in the showpiece heat 13, but Holder’s win simply maintained Pirates’ healthy advantage.

Young Howarth, out again in heat 14, was passed by Sundstrom, but with Proctor’s race win, Pirates’ incredible record was secured with a race to spare.

And the ‘Terrible Twosome’, as they were dubbed by the Showground announcer, completed a stunning night’s work by tearing up the inside of Kenneth Bjerre on turn three of lap two to complete a fine 5-1 in heat 15.

Next up for Poole, a trip to Eastbourne tomorrow – who is brave enough to bet against a 14th consecutive win? Anyone?
