CHERRIES boss Andoni Iraola has issued an extensive update on the injury situation amongst his squad – with a more exact return date for Marcus Tavernier.
Earlier this week the Basque manager revealed that Tavernier would miss the start of the Premier League season, whilst Lloyd Kelly is also a doubt for the opening day visit of West Ham.
However, Iraola provided more insight onto both player’s issues, sharing how the winger could be kept out until the first international break of the season by a knee issue.
He also provided updates on Antoine Semenyo, Ryan Fredericks and Joe Rothwell.
Rothwell is furthest along in his return to match fitness, having come off the bench to feature against Southampton in Tuesday’s friendly.
Iraola started: “Antoine Semenyo started training yesterday for first day with the group.
“So he had the injury (the) previous season and he's recovering well.
“And I think it will take time because he hasn't done any training in pre-season with the group, but he's close to be part of the group.
“Also, I will add Joe Rothwell, that is kind of similar to Semenyo, but he's, I will say 10, 15 days before, so he could even play some minutes against Southampton.
“Lloyd Kelly, he had calf muscle injury, I would say two weeks ago, something like this during the pre-season in Marbella and he should be close for the beginning of the season.
“I don't know if he will arrive or not, but should be like this.
“The worst case is Tavs.
“I don't want to get so technical with the medical stuff, but some issue in the knee.
“I don't know if he will be able to play before the international break.
“We have after, I think Brentford I think it's four games and international break.
“We hope we can count with him before, but it's going to be tough.
“If everything goes normal for the international break, he should be fine.
“And Fredericks is still with the injury he had on the calf and he hasn't started training with the team.”
