AS A previous very keen cyclist and now a motorist, I have a few suggestions on actions that should be taken by the government regarding cyclists.
This needs to be done before any actions regarding road and path improvements for them are taken.
1) All cyclists should be insured.
When there is an accident between a cyclist and a motorist, it is not always the motorist that is at fault, but he doesn’t have a leg to stand on if there is any damage to his car.
Some cyclists have become very arrogant towards the motorist.
Insisting on riding two abreast on busy roads and giving mouthfuls of abuse if you dare confront them.
2) All cyclists by law should wear reflective jackets, always have functioning lights after dark, and should carry a bell or horn.
We walk our dog Baiter along the seafront path from Sandbanks to Bournemouth, both designated for cyclists and walkers.
The cyclists frequently travel between 15mph and 20mph you cannot hear them coming from behind and they don’t carry any form of warning.
Encourage cycling by all means but first make the cyclist more responsible by enforcing some of the above rules as an active road user.
