I SYMPATHISE with Graham Chainey (Echo, Feb 6) regarding the safety when cycling under the bridge between Cranleigh and Clingan roads, but it is not just the road users who are endangered here but pedestrians too.
Approaching from the Southwick Road side to go under the bridge on the right side on the pavement there is a blind bend.
Many a time we have narrowly avoided a nasty accident when speeding cyclists, sometimes two or three together, come tearing round the corner with no possibility of being aware of anyone approaching in the opposite direction.
On reading Mr Chainey’s letter I fully understand why cyclists need to take to the pavements but why can’t they dismount and walk through for everyone’s safety?
Many thousands of pounds have been spent on speed bumps etc. surrounding Stourfield School but if the traffic lights are green, this does not slow the cars down.
Apart from being extremely dangerous for cyclists, if it has been raining and the road is flooded, then pedestrians get a good soaking.
All that is needed is a little consideration, patience and respect by everyone and as Mr Chainey says to slow down for it to be a much safer place and to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safely. VALERIE STAINES, Castlemain Avenue, West Southbourne, Bournemouth
