MY close neighbour FA Ford asks why the RSPB have not intervened in the proposed Navitas Bay wind farm discussion (Daily Echo, Feb 5).

The RSPB’s website shows how they have been involved at all levels in consultations on all the proposed UK windfarms.

They have successfully caused changes and withdrawals to the siting and numbers of turbines from the Thames Estuary and Norfolk Coast windfarms where bird habitats were threatened.

I think the reason why climate change sceptics are angry with the RSPB is that they have looked at the evidence and taken a balanced view in that whilst they accept that there will be a few bird strike fatalities, the greatest threat to our joint long term future is climate change and as a consequence support renewable energy sources, especially offshore wind farms.

The evidence indicates that for every bird killed by wind turbines 5,000 are killed by flying into glass fronted buildings or power lines and eaten by cats.

It also appears to be the case that the bigger the turbine, the fewer birds are killed because they rotate slower than smaller turbines and the birds can fly through safely.
