THE story of King George’s visit to the New Forest during the war (Snapshots of the Past, March 26) brought to mind a story told to our class at Swanage Grammar School shortly after the war.
It was related to us by the headmaster (J W Turner) in his uphill struggle to demonstrate the need for us to improve our diction – largely ‘broad Dorset’.
He said later that day King George’s plane had to make an emergency landing on our school playing field, which was witnessed by a pupil.
When the head asked the pupil how he knew it was King George, the pupil replied he heard him talking to the pilot.
“Really...what did he say?”
The pupil replied: “I clearly heard the King say: ‘Where be we to?’”
