HOW can Cllr Roger West of Bournemouth council say that charging for garden waste would be fairer and more efficient (Daily Echo, May 11), when the experience of Poole is exactly the opposite?
Due to the charge Poole council are now collecting garden waste from only half of householders with gardens. The other half (probably 20,000) either object to the charge or are in no position to pay, could be pensioners or on benefits. What can an old lady do if she loves her garden but has nowhere to throw her rubbish and no transport to take it to a depot, is that fair?
As for efficiency, they now have to travel every road to pick up half of possible garden waste. Wouldn’t it be more efficient to pick up all garden waste with the same distance travelled and for all of it to be composted correctly within the normal rating system.
