FURTHER to the letter from the manager of GE Bridge in Old Christchurch Road (May 25) concerning loo closures, I write with a further observation on the few public conveniences that are left around the town.
It is clear that whoever has the job of locking toilets at ‘the close of business’ each day (the cleaners?) have their own idea of what constitutes ‘daylight’.
The notices on display state they will be open during daylight hours, and there is no question they are often and regularly locked some considerable time before dusk… hours in some cases.
The situation has not improved since the clocks were put forward an hour, either.
It is a statement of the obvious on the permanent signs displayed, that opening hours will vary according to the time of year.
Hours of daylight are determined by just that, and they should be adhered to.
I suggested to the council that perhaps an alternative would be to remove the notices, and have the toilets closed at random ... like now? They declined to respond.
Over recent years I have established nooks and crannies around the town which can be utilised when toilets are closed ... and I know I’m not the only one!
There are now so few toilets left (apart from the seafront) that I feel it is reasonable to expect a high standard of cleanliness, and that they remain open at least the full daylight hours throughout the year.
Some of my visitors, with children, found the toilets opposite the balloon also locked during the time of the balloon’s operation.
Quite unacceptable!
