I READ with interest (and I must admit, a great deal of scepticism) the letter from Cllr Lawrence Williams, cabinet member for tourism, leisure and culture (Daily Echo, May 14).

The letter was, of course, liberally sprinkled with grand-sounding phrases and gov-speak gobbledygook such as ‘town centre vision’ and ‘improving the public realm’.

Apparently the next ‘public realm enhancement’ project is Westover Road. But there is little point in proceeding with that undertaking unless we first relocate Bournemouth bus station (or The Square as it is otherwise known).

Where else but Bournemouth would one find an attractive square separating two sets of beautiful gardens – blighted by a logjam of noisesome and malodorous buses for the best part of every day?

And a far more urgent need is for investment in providing a facility where families and children can enjoy themselves when inclement weather makes the beach a no-go area.

I find it quite astonishing that councillors speak of making the town more ‘family friendly’ when only a few years ago they closed the swimming pool at the BIC (the only place in the town centre where children could enjoy themselves during bad weather) and transformed it into another conference hall. This, I understand has turned out to be something of a white elephant.

Town planners? Does Bournemouth actually have any?
