I am writing to agree with your reader, Simon Gwynn, who wrote regarding the amount of unused beach huts on a nice sunny day (Have Your Say, May 30).
It is a very unfair system when beach huts can just be held on to into infinity and beyond with tenants being able to pass them down through the generations. Many years ago we lived in Sidmouth and rented a beach hut there but the system was much fairer.
You were allowed to rent the hut once in a three-year rotation so that for the other two years another family could rent it and then you were given the option of renting it again or passing it over to someone else. This idea would give a lot more people a chance to enjoy a beach hut. Alternatively, the local authority should be looking actively for a fairer way for more people in the community to have an opportunity to rent for a season.
