MR Stanley-Brown is right to highlight Poole Harbour as a possible energy source for Poole (‘Time to use tidal power’, July 10). Borough of Poole has been working with Bournemouth University and Transition Town Poole members to form the Poole Tidal Energy Partnership (PTEP). PTEP is a community interest company (with no shareholder interest) which aims to develop the use of renewable energy sources in the area to benefit local residents.
Geographic, environmental and economic constraints make the use of tidal power around Poole difficult. However, we are currently developing ideas for a pilot water source heat pump project. This could be scaled up for community heating systems which would be a great way to use the resource on our doorstep. Ultimately, the development of water-based electricity generation remains an aim of PTEP.
As part of meeting the national carbon reduction targets for the borough, moving to renewable alternatives for heating presents a potential opportunity to save energy costs, improve fuel security and help residents in fuel poverty.
