CONGRATULATIONS on the beautifully illustrated double-page spread (Wednesday July 17) celebrating Brownsea Open Air Theatre’s Golden Jubilee.
Proud as I am to be one of the few still around who were in at the very beginning, also worthy of note are John and Maureen Headford (Trinculo and choreographer/dancer) and also Sarah Machin (nee Rendell) who played Miranda – all still alive and kicking and active in theatre locally.
May I correct a couple of inaccuracies in your report? The picture of Patricia Baker in “As You Like It” is actually Helen Johns; and the statement that the 1964 audience sat on the grass gives the impression that they were sprawled on the ground. In fact, they sat on chairs on the grass – much more comfortable but far from the big stands of raked, tip-up seats that modern audiences enjoy.
I should like publicly to thank the present Boat Committee for all the imagination and effort they have put into this year’s outstanding celebrations. Here’s to the next 50 years!
