I AM horrified that any minister in a government with any insight into how high streets work would promote the policy that we will all be allowed to park our vehicles where we want on double yellows and just ‘nip’ into a local shop.
To take our local high street, Ashley Road, Parkstone, currently Poole Council is embarked on first rate plans that will see us ‘rolling back the dominance of vehicles over pedestrians’.
We will see by this time next year better pedestrian crossings, better bus stops, less obstruction in roads by on-street parking and improved flow of traffic.
All this good work, including the work of enforcement officers and Poole camera car curbing the worst of ‘don't care I will park just where suits me’ motorists, and along comes Eric (Eric Pickles in Department of Communities) and announces from Whitehall: “I think I’ll just blow all this good local work completely out of the water”.
“Let’s unleash parking anarchy in the high street. Park where you want folks on double yellows for 15 minutes”.
And there are enforcement officers Eric on hand to time the 15 minutes? It really does beggar all belief. I only hope Poole councillors and our MP will tell Eric this is not a good idea.
Every motorist in town will use the ‘15 minutes’ as suits and we end up with high street chaos. That is the very reason why we have had double yellows in our towns for half a century.
