I AGREE with Jim O’Brien’s letter ‘Islands are weed cause’ in Friday’s Echo August 2. I spent many hours on the lake in the 1940s/50s rowing and sailing people round the lake.
I lived just opposite the Civic Centre and the park. We had no problems in those days.
One thing I would add to Jim’s letter is the lake was drained in the winter when the frost was about, not just flushed out but left empty for days or weeks.
My mates and I would take the opportunity to collect some eels.
I agree, let’s get rid of the islands and the other vegetation around the lake, it’s not necessary.
