WITH regard to the Echo item August 26 on closure of Jubilee toilets, Richard Wilson in his criticism of the council has clearly entirely overlooked the fact that in January traders advised the council that: “several outlets were interested in taking part in the toilet scheme”.
From this officers then stated to the ‘scrutiny committee’ that 14 outlets had been asked to participate, of which three had agreed. And this for a proposed scheme that considered within “500 metres” of Jubilee car-parks was acceptable.
Yet despite these glaring concerns Cllr Lepoidevin and five other councillors voted unanimously to “recommend” closure of toilets.
The whole business, shockingly ill-conceived from the beginning, yet this councillor seeks now to put all responsibility and blame back onto council.
“We were misled” Cllr Lepoidevin tells us. And this from the councillor who along with Cllr Eades in June posed outside closed toilets to tell the whole ward they “wholeheartedly” supported the community scheme.
The truth of the whole matter, in the end we have ended up with a clique speaking for Ashley Road. A couple of councillors and a small number of traders, with far more influence on council than they should ever have.
And now none of them will take any responsibility. Instead we get a councillor blaming everyone but herself, and a trader threatening to take maladministration action against the council, for action they took, on lead advice from self-same trader.
I can only say in 20 years I have never come across such blatant cases seeking to deflect all blame onto others. You do wonder, in council, and business, is there now, dare I say, no honour left?
When things go wrong stand up and say, sorry, that was my error, my fault.
