THE countryside with animals is about balance. When you put a full protection on an animal like the badger, who have no predators, as time goes by, you end up with far too many of them.
They are a predatory animal, preying on ground-nesting bumblebees and ground-nesting birds and their eggs and chicks.
Gone are the days when they were culled in September and October, which, in turn, kept numbers down.
We have got to the stage where there are far too many.
Farmers have a problem with bovine tuberculosis in their cattle. If they get infected, they are slaughtered.
The farmer then has the stress of not being able to sell or move cattle around until proved cleared of the infection, plus the financial part.
