I AM a 74 year old male, normally fit and healthy with no underlying conditions.
I was admitted to Poole Hospital on March 26 with Covid-19 infection.
After the first day my recollections are non-existent but I was sent to ITU and stayed there for 24 days in an induced coma and recovery.
I suffered two bouts of pneumonia, two minor strokes and kidney failure and it was touch and go whether I would make it through. The hospital kept my family informed of my situation and progress throughout this period.
On April 19 I was transferred to the Covid ward A5 and then ward A4 and my process of recovery began.
Over the next four weeks my journey to recovery was made possible by all the hard work and support given by every team member, from consultants and doctors through nurses, HCA’s, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, SALT nurse and everybody involved in my care.
It was world class and second to none. It has enabled me to return home for the next phase of recovery walking and fully-functional.
Our gratitude knows no bounds to everyone involved in my care. At no time did I feel just a patient but someone who mattered.
Thank goodness for the NHS and Poole Hospital in particular.
