THE other day, I was standing by my kitchen windows washing up my tea cup, when I noticed a young ginger cat from about three doors down, slinking on its belly across the road.
A young pigeon was eating the weeds on my front lawn, then a magpie flew onto the lamp post, and started up a racket – no doubt it was calling: “Cat! Cat! Cat!”
Another two magpies joined it, then a large black crow, all their eyes intent on the cat.
They started to dive bomb the cat. Then a passing seagull joined in, and chased off the ginger cat, pecking it all the time on its back, until it finally ran back in fright towards its own home. The seagull flew off with a look of satisfaction.
The pigeon settled back eating the weeds on my front lawn.
It is the first time I have seen three species of birds join forces and see off a cat.
